I wanted to create an environment where I use least textures possible with simple materials setup. One UV used as a "base" to lay out most surface materials & tints, and another to bring some dirt and life to the overall models. I also used decals on some areas to fake indents and bring on some specific details, but it's really occasional. The goal was also to focus more on modeling and UVing stuff than baking/texturing, even if I kept these the handpainted way I love so much, I spend time creating my atlas and then reused it a lot. That was a big step to me, to really feel how powerful & fast this method was. Later I made the servers room in the archives using that technique (and even that same atlas haha), things worked like a charm
